Why Natural

The Karite or Shea Nut

What is Shea Butter?

Shea Butter is a natural plant extract with exceptional moisturizing properties which comes from the Karite or Shea tree. The shea tree produces its first fruit when it is about 45 years old. It produces nuts for up to 200 years after reaching maturity.

What are the differences between East and West African Shea Butter?

The differences between the two begin with the trees from which the butter is harvested. The shea tree grows in the West from Senegal and Ghana to Uganda and Sudan in the East. The main species is the vitellaria paradoxa and it is from the tree of West Africa. East African shea butter comes from a subspecies, vitellaria nilotica that grows in Northern Uganda and southern Sudan.

The Crème de la Crème of Shea Butter.

Because it is extracted manually from the highest quality shea nuts of the nilotica variety, Eastern shea butter is softer and more fragrant than the Western shea butter. East shea butter is naturally higher in oleic acid which melts more gently into the skin and makes it a better moisturizer.  At room temperature Easter Africa shea butter is a semi-solid and is softer than West African shea butter. It is creamier and silkier making it a quick and easy to apply. East shea is also slightly higher in therapeutic properties. Eastern shea butter also has a sweeter scent than West shea. East African shea Butter is highly prized for its superior moisturizing properties, smooth creamy texture and mild fragrance. It is so smooth and creamy you may find it hard to believe this is an all natural product. Eastern shea is much more rare than Western because of the civil unrest between Uganda and Sudan making it extremely difficult to find.

East African Shea Butter is considered to be the Best in the World.

What are the differences between Unrefined and Refined Shea Butter?

There are many differences between the two. Most noticeably are the scent, color and benefits. Unrefined butter maintains its nutty scent, ivory-beige color and all of its healing properties. Refined shea butter has been chemically altered to remove shea butters natural scent, is bleached white in color and loses all of its natural healing properties. Please note that some companies sell refined shea butter as 100% pure shea butter.
